Federer said, “I think there’s some great matches going on. I try to check some highlights, reels more than watching games per se because my life is also a little bit busy, but I’m really happy [to]. I think that the level of play is going up again and again and it’s nice to see that. Also the new generation, challenging the likes of Novak and also Rafa. I hope he comes back.”
Federer and Nadal are not only arch-rivals but are good friends as well, a phenomenon that is quite unheard of in sports.
Both have always had nice words for each other. When Federer cried after losing to Nadal in the 2009 Australian Open final, it was Nadal who gracefully consoled him. Nadal also said that he cried when Federer won his one and only French Open title in 2009. Also, when Federer retired, Nadal couldn’t control his emotions and was seen shedding tears, holding his archrival’s hands.
Although the Swiss Maestro stepped away from professional tennis, he was very much entwined with the sport. In the same interview, he revealed how he tries to stay updated about the current happenings in the tennis world.
