For the very first time, the round-robin event on the women’s tour is taking place in one of the most unique places, Cancun, Mexico. Although the venue is offering a stunning setting for the WTA Finals, there are certain drawbacks as well, including the severe weather. Some of the high-profile matchups in the season-ending championship have already been disrupted due to the adverse conditions in the southeast city.

Even the blockbuster semifinal clash between Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka felt the wrath of the weather gods. The thrilling contest between the two top-ranked players was called off, prompting widespread outrage among the tennis community. Even one of their male counterparts, Denis Shapovalov, has now come forward to slam the authorities for the calamity in Cancun.

Many in the tennis community hold the opinion that the season-ending championship shouldn’t have organized the tournament in Cancun in the first place, especially during this period when it’s the rainy season. On top of that, the stadium that the authorities built in the southeast city of Mexico was designed with an open roof.

Due to rain havoc, the semifinal match between the top two-ranked players was halted after the Pole secured a 2-1 lead in the first set. The highly anticipated showdown was later called off and has now been rescheduled for Monday. Even the American tennis prodigy, Coco Gauff, was sighted holding an umbrella on the sidelines after her match against Jessica Pegula was interrupted due to the weather.

In light of all these harsh conditions in Cancun, the Canadian ATP star recently took to social media to express his disappointment over the same. He tweeted, “It’s really a shame to see the conditions in the WTA finals. Players deserve better”

Apart from the weather conditions, players have also voiced their frustrations about the quality of the hard courts in Cancun.

Top seeds expressed their disappointment about the court surface

After getting stunned by Jessica Pegula, the new world No. 1, Aryna Sabalenka didn’t hold herself back from issuing a blunt take on the conditions of the court. The Belarusian tennis star opened up about how the surface was unfavorable for her as she felt like playing on “leather.”

“On this court.. it’s like leather. You never know what’s gonna happen,” said the reigning Grand Slam champion. Just like Sabalenka, another fourth seed,  Elena Rybakina also complained about the harsh conditions of the outdoor hard courts in Cancun, where the bounce was quite low.
