Former American tennis star John McEnroe was one of the most flamboyant characters on the court. Back in his playing days, the 63-year-old had many heated arguments with umpires and his opponents. Even after his retirement, the American is straightforward and assertive as a tennis analyst and commentator.

Recently, the American legend appeared in a podcast, discussing various aspects of his career, personal life as well as tennis in general. Meanwhile, he shared an interesting observation on the current state of men’s tennis in the US.

McEnroe is concerned about tennis in the US

While discussing the current state of tennis in the country, the 63-year-old recalled that the last time an American won a Grand Slam in the men’s division was a long time ago.

“I see tennis going in this direction. That’s sort of sad. Which is that it is becoming this cult thing, almost. It’s becoming a semi-afterthought in America. We do not have anyone in the top ten. We haven’t had a grand slam champion in 11 years,” he said.

Further, he hailed American women players who have made history in the sport.

“Thank god we have Serena and Venus and the playing field is much more leveled for girls. That’s the part where it’s much better,” he added.

Notably, the last American man to win a Grand Slam was Andy Roddick, back in 2003, which is almost 19 years ago.

John McEnroe backs Nick Kyrgios

Nick Kyrgios is one of the most controversial characters on the tour. The 27-year-old has made millions of fans as well as haters because of his behavior. However, one can not ignore the fact that he is certainly a player to watch out for. The Australian had a wonderful run in the recently concluded Wimbledon Championships. He made it to the finals but was defeated by the defending champion, Novak Djokovic.

In a recent interview, McEnroe came in support of the Aussie. The former player said that “Kyrgios has his demons but tennis needs him.”

Further, he praised the 27-year-old for his locker room behavior and philanthropic work.

“He’s a good kid, the players like him, he’s well-liked in the locker room, he does a lot of charity work,” McEnroe added.
