Despite their numerous on-court battles, Andy Roddick and Roger Federer share a remarkable friendship that stands the test of time. Although the bond between Federer and Rafael Nadal is evident to all, Roddick experienced emotional moments behind the camera during the Swiss tennis legend’s farewell match. Recently, the former American world number one opened up about his connection with the 42-year-old tennis legend while looking back on the farewell day.

In a recent podcast episode of ‘Served with Andy Roddick,’ the former US Open champion who has faced the Swiss legend on the court 24 times, talked about the emotional moment that left the whole world in tears. Roddick also touched on the emotional moment between Rafa and Roger, and how that moment made it almost impossible for the American to go on camera next.

“Out of respect for kind of their outsized presence in each other’s lives. That meant so much to me. I had to go on air on T.C. live, right after that. And I almost didn’t make it through the show. Like it was, it was, it was very hard and I think they’re both gems of humans.”

Along with that, in the same conversation, the American tennis legend talked about his bond with the 20-time Grand Slam champion. He said, “As much as I kind of joke about Roger him kicking my a** light-heartedly, we have a friendship that will live on forever. We still text, we check in, he has done many, many things outside of the lens of the camera.”

But last year, when Roddick appeared on Tennis Channel Live to relive his experience at the 2023 Met Gala, which he and his wife, Brooklyn Decker, attended, he discussed his encounter with Federer. He stated, “The people were better looking than the last prom I went to, I’ll tell you that much. But it was a blast! We got to go and support our friend Roger Federer, who did a great job hosting; I think that means shaking hands with people.”

The Swiss maestro co-chaired the Met Gala alongside Michaela Coel, Penélope Cruz, Dua Lipa, and Anna Wintour; this may have contributed to the notable tennis attendance, which included 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams and ATP’s Matteo Berrettini. On the other hand, the American legend once also revealed how he wasn’t happy facing the 42-year-old tennis legend on the court.

When Roddick made a huge revelation regarding his competition with Federer
