In recent years, Italy’s Jannik Sinner has become a player to look out for on the men’s tour. Since turning pro in 2018, Sinner has managed to win 5 titles, 4 of them coming last year.  

After winning all his singles matches at the ATP Cup 2022, Sinner entered the Australian Open 2022 on a high note. The Italian has entered the quarter-finals of the year-opening Slam, dropping just one set till now.

However, this is not the only thing to look out for. Jannik Sinner recently touched on a milestone at the Australian Open 2022. The world number 10 became the youngest player since 2007 to reach this milestone. 

Jannik Sinner reached an incredible milestone with Round of 16 match

Sinner, at 20 years 153 days, became the youngest player to reach four Round of 16’s in Grand Slam events. The youngster was preceded by Novak Djokovic, who achieved this milestone at the age of 20 years and 5 days, at the 2007 Roland Garros. 

Sinner first moved towards this milestone at Roland Garros 2020. He reached the Quarter Finals, where he was beaten by the 13-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal in three sets.

He took the second step towards the milestone at the same event in the following year. Jannik reached the 4th round of Roland Garros 2021, where he was again beaten by Rafa in straight sets.  

Building on the momentum, Sinner took the next step in the same year. He reached the fourth round of US Open 2021, where he was beaten by fourth seed Alexander Zverev

The Italian has taken the last step to reach this milestone at this year’s Australian Open, where he faced Aussie Alex De Minaur in the fourth round and comfortably got the better of him. 

Sinner’s Australian Open 2022 campaign

Having a successful 2021 season, 11th seed Jannik Sinner entered the Australian Open 2022 as one of the challengers for the throne.

He started off his campaign at Melbourne Park with a straight-set win over Portugal’s Joao Sousa. He next took on USA’s Steve Johnson, beating him in straight sets yet again. Sinner played his third-round match against Japanese qualifier Taro Daniel, and beat him in four sets. After getting past De Minaur, Sinner has entered the quarters of a Slam for only the second time in his career.
