During the recent Swiss Indoors final, Holger Rune, and the chair umpire, Mohamed Lahyani, got into a verbal altercation over a decision made by the official. The player trained under Serena Williams’ ex-coach, has continued to rise through the ATP rankings. Fans were not pleased with the player’s behaviour and posted their views on social media.

In the middle of a point, Dane was startled by an abrupt change in the background of his opponent. Lahyani, the chair umpire, admitted to Rune that if he had noticed the screen moving, he would have stopped the point. During a crucial point in the high-intensity game, Rune and Lahyani got into a heated argument.

Chair umpire abused by the talented player who trained under Serena Williams ‘ former coach

Patrick Mouratoglou, the former coach of Serena Williams, is assisting the Danish teenager, Holger Rune, with his preparation for the 2023 season as well as the remainder of this year.

The former junior world number one was defeated by Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal, by 6-3, 7-5 in the recent Swiss Indoors final match. During the match Rune became quite animated and enraged with Lahyani, using some foul language to express his feelings.

Fans were quick to call out the behaviour of Danish tennis players. A Twitter user quoted Rune at the match, “What the f**k are you doing? You must be f**king kidding me. F**k. You don’t even look at me, you’re too proud to look at me, you’re like a king.”

The user also quoted the umpire’s words, “Don’t talk like you did, don’t want this kind of words, have respect.

In 2022, Holger Rune was successful to reach his first Grand Slam final. He was quick to post his defence about the controversial exchange. He captioned it, “So umpires are human but not the players? Umpires can make mistakes but not the players 😒.”

The ATP had once issued an investigation for Rune’s homophonic remarks

In Biella, Rune won his first Challenger title. Even if they occurred at the start of a player’s career, some events stick with them as the years go by. When his opponent hit the ball out of bounds and when he scored the winning point in the semifinals of the Biella Challenger in Italy, Rune reacted sharply in a similar way.

The ATP acknowledged the beginning of a formal investigation. ATP launched the investigation on the ground by Section 2 of the Player Code of Conduct. Rune apologized for his language on Instagram. Rune added that the slurs were directed at himself.
