ATP number one Jannik Sinner stands on the verge of another Grand Slam victory, but across the net awaits a tough opponent. It’s the ruthless Alexander Zverev, who pushes his rivals to the limits. Since the stakes are high with an intense rivalry on show, one former pro has raised an alarm leaving a question: could this clash transform into a grueling test of endurance for Jannik Sinner?
Sinner will defend his title at the Rod Laver Arena against Germany’s Alexander Zverev. Before this meeting, the duo played against each other six times with Zverev leading their head-to-head by 4-2 (he has a lead of 2-1 in Grand Slam encounters). Among all the major tournaments, Sinner could manage a victory against the ATP number two only in the pre-quarterfinals of the 2020 Roland Garros. Despite the statistics though, Sinner is the top contender to win the Australian Open title because of his recent form. However, one aspect might still be problematic for the Italian, as highlighted by Eurosport’s expert and former pro player Jim Courier.

Calling Zverev a “point extender,” Courier said the rivalry might be “physical” between the ATP stars. “Last time they played in Cincinnati in the semi-finals it was 7-6 in the third, it was incredibly physical. Over three hours physical,” he concluded. Courier suggested that Sascha might keep the ball in play, making tough shots that can transform the match into a heavily physically demanding battle. The former pro opined that a physically demanding battle could bring a challenge for Jannik Sinner given the fitness issues he faced in the semis.
Sinner suffered leg cramps during the third set of his semifinal clash against Ben Shelton in Melbourne. His trainer quickly managed the situation by massaging his thighs. The Italian then returned to the court and secured a straight-sets victory. Even though he finished that match, question marks are still there over Sinner’s fitness.
Sinner, however, isn’t bothered. “Without playing any tournaments before, you never know what’s happening. Then you try to raise your level day by day. All of us who go deep in tournaments have some days where they struggle a little bit more,” the world No. 1 said.

The Italian further acknowledged the challenge Zverev could pose to him.
Jannik Sinner called Alexander Zverev “an incredible player”
The Sinner vs Zverev rivalry started in the 2020 French Open when the 19-year-old Sinner defeated Sascha in the fourth round. A three-time finalist of the Slam, Zverev later revealed that he felt unwell before the match. However, Sinner dismissed that claim by calling it an excuse. Ever since the duo has met five times on the court and the mutual admiration is there. Sinner believes his match against the German star would be “very tough,” since Zverev is “an incredible player.”

On the flip side, Zverev also showered praise on Sinner. “In terms of tennis, he absolutely deserves to be number one in the world. He has won two Grand Slam titles, three Masters titles, and the ATP Finals. He is the best player in the world, he has won the most titles,” Zverev concluded. He also revealed he had known Sinner since he was 15 or 16 and used to train under Riccardo Piatti in Monte Carlo.
