Jimmy Connors is an old man now, but in the 1970s, he was the most iconic figure in men’s tennis. His top-notch on-court performances combined with his off-court charm and charisma made him a household name. Unsurprisingly, he also became friends and got acquainted with several high-profile players from other sports. NBA legend Charles Barkley is one of them.
In the most recent episode of the Advantage Connors podcast, Jimbo took a trip down memory lane and revisited a famous baseball game that took place in 2001. He was in attendance, as was Charles Barkley and something funny happened that still brings smiles to Connors’ face.

As the podcast episode was winding down to its conclusion, Jimmy Connors took listeners back to the 2001 World Series. It came to light that he and his son Brett had gone to watch the game between the New York Yankees and the Arizona Diamondbacks. He also said that NBA icon Charles Barkley was quite close to them.
“In the third game we sat out beyond the center field wall where there was a pool. We’re sitting there watching the game and I look over, and Charles Barkley’s standing next to us.” Brett, who was quite young at the time, acknowledged his father’s statement saying, “Yeah, Barkley was there”.
What Brett mentioned next was hilarious, as he suddenly remembered how Barkley found himself in a pool that day. “I remember he got tossed into the pool. Someone tossed him in, then he got changed. It was pretty funny.”
Ultimately, the match finished in the Diamondbacks’ favor even though the Yankees went into it as favorites.

The father-and-son duo is conjuring up some compelling content
Jimmy Connors and his son Brett are doing pretty well when it comes to their Advantage Connors podcast. It’s something the duo created to keep talking about their love for all things tennis, but they also offer insights into their compelling experiences beyond tennis.
For instance, in the same episode, Jimbo opened up about passion and enthusiasm for boxing. He also talked at length about watching boxing legends like Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson from up close. Furthermore, he reminisced about how his crippling gambling addiction developed owing to his love for boxing. All in all, the podcast is proving to be a solid product from the father and son duo, and we can’t wait for more!
