The Lakers president, who has also known the NBA legend for years, was recently invited as a guest on Jimmy Connors’ podcast show ‘Advantages Connors’. In the podcast, she opened up about the Chicago Bulls star’s philosophy of making enemies in his head in order to hone his skills and develop the motivation. This approach paid dividends as it helped MJ to become the best player in the league during his heyday.

She said, “Michael Jordan really didn’t have that one defined, you know, enemy that got in his head. He almost created those rivalries just to get himself pumped up.”

Every great athlete has some traits that make him/her stand out from the crowd. And for the former basketball player, creating enemies boosted his confidence and his game to the next level. After hearing about Jordan’s approach, Connors, who was hosting the show with his son, also opened up about how he used his rivals to better his own performances.

Jimmy Connors on Jordan’s philosophy of making rivals

In that same conversation, the 8-time Grand Slam champion praised MJ’s dedication towards his sport. According to Connors, that literally made him a true champion, irrespective of the sport. He also praised his idea to keep himself motivated at all times.

He said, “That is the mark to me of a true champion. You know to be able to find a reason, whether staring right into your face or creating something and so you know you mention Michael Jordan. How can you mention somebody any bigger than that?”
