After Crashing Out of Home Turf Tournament, American Tennis Ace Frances Tiafoe Reflects on a ‘Bad Game’ as Two Matches in a Day Take Their Toll

The most anticipated Hard court Slam is nearing, as the hangover of Grass has vanished. The schedule is getting more hectic than Wimbledon Championships, with players playing two back-to-back matches on the same day. In the Citi Open, Taylor Fritz beat Andy Murray and Jordan Thompson in consecutive matches played in a 3-hour gap. He advanced to the semi-final without breaking his 7-match win streak. Frances Tiafoe, too, had the same schedule, but his journey ended with the quarter-finals.

After Tiafoe lost to Daniel Evans of Britain, the American revealed that it was a tough thing as he recalled another tournament in which he played two vital matches in a day.

In the post-match conference, Tiafoe was asked if he could remember a time in which a similar situation occurred. This is not the first time the 2nd seed of the Citi Open played two back-to-back matches in a day. But it is the first time for the American rising star to lose a 2nd match in a day.

Tiafoe reminisced, “Houston, I won the tournament over the weekend (smiling). That was some experience (smiling). I was kind of, you know, going back to that and remembering what I was doing there.” The ATP 10th seed revealed that he did the same things in his recent match as he did back in Houston.

He said, “But I did the same thing. I recovered. I ate, hydrated again, got ready for my next match. But, I mean, it’s tough. I mean, again, I mean, it’s one of those things, like sometimes you have to tip your hat to the guy.”?The US Open semi-finalist felt that he played his worse at his home tournament, which he used to sneak in as a kid.

Tiafoe said that Evans played his best while he played a bad game against him. He stated, “Like, he played really well. I genuinely feel like I played one bad game tonight. Other than that, he played great tennis, man. It was tough.”?After winning his first round at Washington, the 25-year-old seemed cheerful and shared his thoughts about Citi Open.

The 3 singles titles winner revealed in an interview with Eurosport that he would sneak in to watch this tournament as a kid. He expressed how emotional it would be to win the same tournament that he used to hide and watch. This emotional attachment probably made him blame himself, despite it being the second match in a day.

Citi Open memories are one of the reasons why ‘Big Foe’ chose to become a professional player. Even in 2022, Tiafoe lost to Nick Kyrgios in the quarter-finals. But ‘Big Foe’ has another significant dream before he can play next year’s Citi Open.
