‘Great Sportsmanship’: Golf World Reacts to Bubba Watson’s Tweet

The 2022 Saudi International had a nail-biting finish. The American golfer, Harold Varner III, held his nerves and won the event in dramatic fashion, by a stroke. While Bubba Watson was confident enough of at least a playoff, Varner had some other plans. He shot -13 for the event while Bubba shot -12. 

Notably, Harold needed an eagle on the final hole to win the event. And hence, the chances of playoffs were high, so Bubba was hopeful of competing with his friend in the playoff. But Harold completed the hole with an eagle and won the trophy. However, Bubba immediately congratulated Harold Varner III and, after a while, posed for the cameras with his friend.

Harold Varner III was just a stroke behind the lead, with around three holes remaining, while Bubba had already posted a score of -12. However, Harold scored a bogey on the 16th hole and dropped to -10. But he made an impressive comeback by scoring a birdie on the second last hole.

He needed an eagle on the 18th to lift the trophy. And he had reached to the fringe on the front of the green in two strokes. So Varner was around 92ft from the pin, and he decided to go with the putter instead of chipping it. He made a phenomenal putt from 92ft and won the 2022 Saudi International. 

Meanwhile, Bubba Watson, who was watching this from a distance, came in and congratulated Harold on his incredible victory. He displayed incredible sportsmanship and did not express any frustration whatsoever.

In fact, both golfers even had dinner together later and Bubba tweeted a picture with Harold, saying, “Dinner with the champion!! Congrats, Harold Varner III.”
