Ashes 2019: James Anderson Ruled Out of the Series as England Name Replacement

James Anderson has been ruled out of the remainder of The Ashes 2019 after he failed to recover form a calf injury.

Anderson, 37, was injured on the first test and could not continue. He missed the second next two test matches due to his calf injury. To regain match fitness, he was playing for Lancashire XI in a friendly game against Durham, where he bowled 20 overs. During the match he is understood to have aggravated the injury.

According to an ECB statement, the 37-year-old “became aware of right calf pain” while bowling on Thursday. “He immediately sought a medical assessment from Lancashire and was withdrawn from the remainder of the game,” the statement continued.

Somerset seamer Craig Overton has been named as a replacement for the injured Anderson in the 13-man squad.

Making his debut in Australia in 2017, the right-arm pacer from Somerset has played only three test matches and a One Day International since. He has picked up 279 wickets in 85 matches at an average of 25. He can also bat a bit. But it would be a surprise if he finds a place in the playing XI ahead of the likes of Jofra Archer, Chris Woakes, Stuart Broad and even Sam Curran.

England do not make any other changes in the squad and are expected to go with the same lineup that they played at Headingley.

Ben Stokes led a miraculous victory in the last test match to level the series 1-1. As the hosts will take on Australia at Old Trafford in Manchester from September 4, the Oz will be vary that a win can still see them retain the Ashes.
