After weeks of speculation, Arsenal will be looking to finalize a loan deal for Barcelona midfielder Denis Suarez for before the bell rings on the 31st January. The deal will also include a ?20 million option to buy him in the summer. This means a reunion for the player with Arsenal manager Unai Emery who was his manager at Sevilla during the 2014-15 season, where he was on loan from Barcelona. Suarez has reportedly rejected loan moves to Spanish clubs to Sevilla and Real Betis, in order to return to English Football, where he was previously with Manchester City, starting merely 2 senior games.
Suarez also missed Tuesday’s training session at Barcelona with the club confirming his absence to ‘sort out his future at the club’. It is also reported Barcelona are working to extend his contract by 1 year, which is supposedly being done to protect his market value, as he would enter the final year of his contract beginning from next season. It would be welcome move for the player after seeing very little game time, making just 8 appearances this season. Barcelona are looking to make some money and space for their new signing Frenkie De Jong, who’ll be joining in the coming summer from Ajax.
What does Suarez bring to Arsenal?
Being a potential replacement for the outgoing Aaron Ramsey, Arsenal will be hoping that Suarez can contribute in the final third. While not exactly Ramsey’s mould, Suarez is a fine midfielder and could bring his ball carrying ability to Arsenal. He can fit in the easily in a midfield 3 or in the left sided midfielder in a diamond, which Unai Emery has frequently resorted to in the recent games.
Emery will be looking to recreate the magic with Suarez and looking to win the Europa League again as they did with Suarez’s lone season with Sevilla.
