Villagers are the heart and soul of any island in Animal Crossing New Horizons. These cute creatures that roam the place give the game a lot of character, and many of them even help the players a lot. This includes getting items from various events, challenges, and even some entertainment. In the current game, there are almost 400 villagers for players to choose from.

But players have a massive dilemma on their hands as they can only have 10 of them on their island at a time. So sometimes they have to make the hard choice of replacing some good ones. This happens for a variety of reasons such as the introduction of new NPCs, or a drop in the usefulness of certain villagers over time. Other than that, players also like to freshen the experience up now and then.

Conditions for villagers to leave in Animal Crossing New Horizons

Animal Crossing New Horizons villagers automatically leave an Island if players fulfill certain conditions. First, fans need to make sure that a minimum of six villagers are present in their Island for any NPC to leave. Along with that, they also need to make sure that they have talked with the villager they want to move out at least once.

Other than that, they also need to wait a minimum of 15 days following the departure of an NPC if they want to move out another one. Also, there is a 5 day cooldown timer as well if a player had a ‘Don’t leave’ conversation with another villager on their Island.

Reasons for villagers not moving out

Even after meeting these conditions, sometimes villagers won’t get the thought bubble, which showcases their desire to leave. Players can’t remove NPCs who were the last to join the Island. So if they want these characters to leave, then they might have to pluck out another villager first. Other than that, these NPCs won’t also get the thought bubble if they were the last one asked to stay. So other than the five-day cooldown timer, it will also exclude them from the leaving conversation.

Players can’t also remove them during a one-week period before and after their birthday. Along with that, these villagers won’t get a thought bubble if the players recently moved their house.

How to improve your chances to remove a certain villager

Friendship for villagers matters a lot, so if players want to remove someone, then they should always target their relationship with them. They can do this by improving their friendship with everyone else, by talking to them constantly. Once the level is high enough, fans can send them gifts, letters, and many more items to strengthen their bond.

They can also ruin the friendship with the villager they want to move out by hitting them with tools. They can also deteriorate it by ignoring their task after accepting it from the NPC. Other than that, players can also gift them garbage items like tires, weeds, or rotten turnips.

Final kick-out process in Animal Crossing New Horizons

Players can speed up the process to meet the criteria by time-traveling to the future. It is always better to travel 30 days into the future, because it maximizes their chances to get the thought bubble over the villager they want to move out. Other than that, it’s always good to set the time to 1 pm, because it’s the most common time for the NPCs to be wandering about the Island.

If the thought bubble doesn’t show up over the villager’s head after moving around for a minute, it’s better to save the game, exit it and travel another day into the future. They can also do this, if the thought bubble shows up on the wrong NPC. It’s important that players only hop one day ahead every time, otherwise they encounter a glitch where the new villager will get stuck with the house exterior of the old one.

Finally, if the thought bubble shows up on the villager that the player wants to move out, then they can have the conversation where the NPC will talk about its desire to leave. Following the character’s departure, a new one enters the Island. Players should only move back in time, after the new villager completely moves in, or they will encounter the same glitch.
