Earlier it felt like NASCAR drivers were the ones on the radar of criticism from journalists. However, it seems the tables have turned now. Recently, renowned Fox Sports journalist Bob Pockrass was targeted brutally by a NASCAR insider for calling Ryan Preece’s accident at Daytona one of the most memorable moments of 2023. When Pockrass took to social media to talk about the same, he was called out by NASCAR insider Brian Murphy for not being able to judge properly.
Bob Pockrass’s latest post deemed disgraceful
Perhaps nobody can forget the multiple flips Ryan Preece’s car endured when racing at Coke Zero Sugar 400 earlier this year. After making contact with Chase Briscoe on the track, the #41 car went airborne as it flipped more than a dozen times before coming to a complete halt. While Preece escaped unscathed, the incident was surely scary to watch.

Recalling the gut-wrenching crash, Bob Pockrass shared a video on Twitter where he deemed the incident as one of the most memorable ones. The caption of the post read, “Memorable Moments of the 2023 NASCAR Season. No. 1: Ryan Preece’s wild Daytona flip after flip after more flips was a horrific wreck to watch. Seeing him get out brought great relief. And then he showed the world his bloodshot eyes prior to racing the following week.”
However, the post did not go well with Brian Murphy, a metal fabricator working in the internal circuit of NASCAR. He reposted the tweet with a caption that brutally criticized Bob Pockrass’s judgement of the word “memorable.” He wrote, “I LOVE @bobpockrass, but of all the great things that happened not only in the Cup Series but #NASCAR as a whole in 2023, for Ryan Preece’s wreck at Daytona to be #1 on this list is an absolute complete disgrace.”

While most of the fans disagreed with Brian, he was all set to give a befitting reply to most of them.
As soon as a fan commented on his post, saying, “To be fair, he said memorable, not great. I’ll never forget this crash. Unfortunate but unforgettable,” Brian immediately jumped in to fire back with, “Wilkesboro? One wreck overshadows the biggest reopening in the sports history?! SVG coming in and winning Chicago?! A speedway wreck?!?!?”
Likewise, when another fan commented on his post, writing, “To be fair, the first thing more than 50% of people would think of from NASCAR 2023 would be “Bro, remember that crazy crash that one dude had where he was flying through the air?”, Brian replied back with, “I completely disagree.”

This year’s campaign has been littered with moments that fans can never get off of their minds. While Ryan Preece’s hair-raising accident undoubtedly stole the show this year, as a real edge-of-the-seat moment that could’ve gone south in a heartbeat, here are other iconic moments that went down this year:
- If we’re picking cherries, Kevin Harvick‘s adieu would definitely take the cake. Kevin, raising a toast to his team on the pit road, marking his final bow in Phoenix, was more than just a farewell; it was the end of an era, the last curtain call for the ’70s-born NASCAR greats.
- Then there’s the nostalgic trip down memory lane to Wilkesboro Speedway. After a 26-year hiatus, the Cup Series made a grand comeback to the spruced-up North Wilkesboro Speedway, turning it into an arena for the All-Star Race. Kyle Larson was in his element, seizing the lead early and holding onto it till the very end.
- Furthermore, we cannot overlook Shane Van Gisbergen’s thunderous victory, which sent a few seasoned NASCAR pros back to the drawing board. It was a moment for the history books – NASCAR’s maiden street race in Chicago’s concrete jungle. Gisbergen, a hotshot from the Supercars circuit, burst onto the scene and clinched victory on his first Cup Series outing, leaving competing drivers as confused as fans and viewers.
- A highlight reel isn’t complete without mentioning Denny Hamlin and Ross Chastain‘s olive branch moment, as brought to light on Dale Jr‘s podcast. Notorious for their past clashes, including last year’s Martinsville race, where Chastain pulled the iconic “Hail Melon” move and the Phoenix race, where Denny Hamlin intentionally wrecked Chastain and didn’t regret it, the duo finally seemed ready to bury the hatchet this season. In fact, Denny Hamlin recently even admitted on Dale Jr’s podcast his desire to invite Chastain on Actions Detrimental atleast once.
- Last but not the least, William Byron‘s battle with the elements at Martinsville is worth a mention. He was apparently racing his way through soaring temperatures inside his car. With his helmet fan giving up on him and hot air blowing onto his face, Byron was almost at the brink of passing out during the race. When came out of the car, he could barely stand and even described the experience as “Hell in a bottle” at one point. The driver later confessed, “It was so blurry in the car and I just wanted to pull in, but you’re not going to do that.”
