Fernando Alonso association with Mercedes has always been that of a rival, as he lost out to them in 2014 with Ferrari. There were also rumours of him moving to the team but those never materialized after Lewis Hamilton joined them.

And now Alonso feels that the era of Mercedes dominance is coming to an end. When speaking to crash.net, Alonso said, “I’m curious to see if the Mercedes cycle will end. I feel that the moment is near.”

The two-time World Champion has come out and said that he will be keeping a close eye on Formula 1 and it is likely that he will be involved in testing for McLaren. He is currently competing in the Indy Car series, and recently won the Daytona 24 Hours in the dying minutes of a rain-torn event.

He was seen as one of the best drivers on the grid talent-wise, even in his last season, but a combination of poor attitude and bad decisions prevented him from winning more than two titles.

His combative nature meant that top teams like Red Bull did not prefer to sign him and rather looked towards their own academy, which has thrown up stars like Ricciardo, Vettel and Verstappen in recent years.

It is likely that if Mercedes are not dominant in 2019, a comeback would be more likely. It it is thought that only McLaren or Renault would be likely to sign Alonso so the success of these two teams will also be critical.
