Is Alex Bregman going to sign with the Cubs? According to one insider, yes, it’s a possibility – Bregman’s options are now narrowed down to two teams, the Detroit Tigers and the Blue Jays. But there’s more, with two surprising teams that could snatch the third baseman away. The Cubs and the D-backs have an “outside possibility” that can sign Alex.

While the Jays and the Tigers are still the favorites to land the third baseman, the former had a somewhat frustrating off-season where they missed out on other top free agents. Naturally, signing Bregman would help fill that need for additional power and consistency in their offense. Given that many of the top free agents have already signed, Bregman is one of the final top-tier players available.

According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, “I think the Cubs are an outside possibility.” Heyman also mentioned four teams that could sign Alex Bregman for his services, giving the most likely team tag to the Tigers because of the connection with A. J. Hinch. While Heyman also listed the Blue Jays, the next tag of an ‘outside possibility’ was given to the Cubs and the Diamondbacks. That’s exciting for fans, who will get to see the third baseman pick home for the next few years. Heyman further backed the Cubs case by highlighting that the club now has the money to afford Bregman after they cleared payroll with the Bellinger trade.

Chicago, on the other hand, has neither said yes nor said no to the possibility of adding Bregman. Meanwhile, the D-backs have also gotten the tag of an “outside possibility”, and guess why? Heyman thinks that he would “fit” in their lineup; their offense was good last year and ading Alex would certainly help. There is also the fact that the third baseman is from Arizona, New Mexico, so playing for Arizona would make Bregman feel good. However, the insider is not sure if the D-backs can afford Bregman because they just got Corbin Burnes. Initially, the Red Sox were also in the mix, but those whispers have died down.

Boston is not out of the race, but they’re not also fully invested in getting Alex Bregman. According to Jon Heyman, the reason behind the Rex Sox falling behind could be that they already have a starting first baseman and a starting third baseman. Rafael Devers, who’s the third baseman for the Red Sox, may be unwilling to shift to second base and make room for Bregman.

That being said, Heyman still hasn’t ruled out the possibility of them acquiring Bregman. Could Boston sign Bregman for second base? There’s a chance since Bregman was open to shipping positions if the ‘right’ situation comes along. CBS Sports predicts that the Boston Red Sox will ultimately win the Alex Bregman sweepstakes because of their willingness to meet his $200 million target.

If the Red Sox land Alex Bregman, it would require a lot of shifting across their infield. To accommodate Bregman at third base, Rafael Devers would shift to first. Meanwhile, Triston Casas, the current first baseman, could either rotate between first and designated hitter or potentially become a trade chip for further roster upgrades. This scenario would provide the Red Sox with flexibility, both in terms of lineup construction and trade opportunities.
