A “dog collar match” is very rare and only a few videos of the stipulation exist. In those videos, things are described differently, causing utter confusion.

To clear the confusion, AEW brought in wrestling veteran Arn Anderson. In a recent AEW post, Anderson talks about the speculation and the standards of a dog collar match.
“For those who don’t know, a “dog collar match” has been very rarely done in the business. I think, probably, the reason for that is the possibility and the danger involved. In essence, you take a dog collar with either end is of 10-12 inches,” Anderson explained. “One man puts a collar around his neck; another man puts a collar around his neck. They are free to use that chain in any way they choose.”
He reiterated that there are only a few dog collar matches in history. For him, the one that stands out the most is the match between Greg Valentine and Roddy Piper. The duo settled something vicious in the match.
“They understood the dangers of going in, and both of those guys turned it into a bloodbath. It set the standard. It will always be revered as the standard for dog collar matches.”

“Adversity introduces a man to himself,” the veteran said. At the end of the day, Cody is not going in the ring to get the title back; he will get the respect back. He needs to get back his own self-respect first before he can earn others’ respect.
