He reveals that this name was more cast upon him than him choosing it for himself.
The time of the incident was back when he was only 18 years old. In fact, he had absolutely no idea that the day would feature his very first match.
“That name was given to me. Before one of my very first matches when I was 18, I was put in a stoner football player comedy act to get my feet wet. I didn’t even know I was going to have my first match that day.”
According to his knowledge, the only responsibility he had during the Heartland Wrestling Association show of 2004 was selling popcorn and soda.
This was the case until someone let him know that he will be in the 3rd match. Even though he promptly prepared himself, the problem at hand was that he was a wrestler with no name.

With only minutes left in hand to pick a name, he could not think of one single name that would suit his persona.
Fortunately, an individual in the locker room suggested that he go with the character played by Van Der Beek in Varsity Blues – Jonathan Moxley.
“Literally, minutes before I went out, they said, ‘Come up with a name,’ and I totally froze up. I couldn’t think of anything. One of the guys in the locker room said, ‘Who’s the guy from Varsity Blues? Jonathan Moxley? Be him.’ Mox was played in the movie by James Van Der Beek, but the guy screwed up his name. He was Jonathan Moxon. And that’s how it started.”

Luckily for Moxley, the name fit perfectly with his persona like two pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.
“It’s completely random. But it works, especially where you can shorten it to Mox.”
