4-time world champion Lewis Hamilton is aiming for his fifth career title in 2018. All the signs are pointing to a fierce battle with Sebastian Vettel.
However, fellow 4-time world champion Alain Prost thinks that the Mercedes driver’s target is blinkered and solely focused on his German rival.
Instead, the Renault advisor believes that Hamilton’s teammate, both Ferrari drivers and both Red Bull driver have a good shot at winning the top honours.
Valtteri Bottas, Kimi Raikkonen, Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen have proved that they are no slouches and can challenge at the front of the grid.
Prost highlighted the aforementioned drivers’ forms as the reason why Hamilton has taken four races to win his first race of the season.
“The six drivers for Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull can be competitive in all circumstances,” Prost said.
“It’s more difficult for Hamilton, who has usually fought for championships against single drivers only.
“Now he will not be able to manage races in the same way against four or five competitors, but for us it will be exciting.”
Prost also backed his former side, Ferrari to win the world championship. However, he felt that it was too close to choose between Raikkonen and Vettel.
“I think this year Ferrari can win,” Alain Prost added. “I think the engine has progressed more than the chassis
“I made a mistake last year when I said that every time there is a change of regulation, Ferrari was rarely there.
“In the winter Mercedes and Red Bull seemed to be a little better, but it turned out that they (Ferrari) are there in qualifying and tyre management.
“Also Raikkonen is there at Vettel’s level which will be a great help.”
Lewis Hamilton cannot afford to let his guard down, the last time he was in such a position, he was battling Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa for the 2007 title. Perceiving Massa as a bigger threat, he failed to keep tabs on Raikkonen. Raikkonen went on to win the title.
Now, all the teams are gearing up for the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona in less than a week’s time.
