Daniel Sturridge’s return to Liverpool ushered a ray of hope and renewed spirits as they brought down West Ham in a comfortable 2-0 victory. While the other strikers failed to make a mark, Sturridge’s cutting edge tactics was exactly what Liverpool was missing throughout the first half of the season.

Sturridge, Coutinho and Sterling combining so well throughout the match was a treat to watch for the fans. Coutinho is arguably one of the best creative midfielders the team has had recently. The blistering pace of Sterling & Markovic, the sharpness of Sturridge and the work ethic of Lallana & Henderson can take Liverpool and possibly English football team to its acme.

Liverpool’s game had been aggressive last season which lacked an effective defense. The addition of Sakho to the starting 11, induced composure in the back three. The Frenchman, in particular,  is strong in the air, sturdy in his tackles and dominant in possession. Emre Can, playing in his makeshift right center back position, had been a constant target for West Ham strikers trying to browbeat him. His spirit and maturity in handling such situations is truly commendable, thereby making this young German a terrific future prospect for Liverpool. Martin Skrtel has been another rock in the back three – solid and unrelenting. The 3-5-2 formation seems to suit him very well, and he’s been playing some of his best games recently.

One player who has risen from the ashes, rejuvenated, but simply not been given enough credit is Lucas- proving himself to be a constant protection to the back three. Strong in his tackles & smart in his interceptions, Lucas simply refuses give in. His efficient defensive midfield play more than makes up for his dearth in speed.

Mignolet’s terrible start in the season has been offset by his recent return to form. The confidence with aerial balls as well as corners, reflects his improved game and might as well prove crucial for Liverpool. The affinity for sweeper keepers that Rodgers has, also speaks about the style Mignolet is adopting.

The academy youngsters too are slowly being inducted into the team. Jordan Ibe’s cameo revealed Rodgers belief in young players. Ibe seemed to enjoy beating defenders on the field while coming close to scoring a goal occasionally. On the other hand, Jordan Rossiter has been sitting on the bench more frequently, throwing yet another indication that Rodgers believes in Liverpool’s academy prospects.

This current Liverpool squad has cheered up the fans. With the top 4 close in sight and a strong presence in cup competitions, the Reds will be seeking to give Steven Gerrard the grand farewell he deserves.
