On-going Gerard Pique’s event, Davis Cup Finals 2019 in Madrid, Spain certainly doesn’t seem to be a major success. As of now, there are two team competitions in tennis, the first being the historic Davis Cup and the second one being the newly introduced ATP Cup. Gerard Pique wants to hold a meeting with the governing body of men’s tennis, ATP and is looking forward to fusing both the team events of the sport.

“We will try to arrive at a deal with the ATP,” Gerard Pique said (as per Tages-Anzeiger). “We really believe there has to be only one team competition instead of two. It would be better for the sport.” The discussions couldn’t take place this year as ATP was dealing with their own issues.

“We are open to discussions with the ATP. Now, that there will be a new president, we will do that. It was difficult this year since the position of the former president wasn’t very clear,” FC Barcelona’s center-back continued.

Pique wants the Davis Cup format to continue. “We want to keep moving to the competition. We understand the Davis Cup is owned by all the federations. It has to be moved to Asia, North America, South America, to different cities,” he added.

The revamped format of the Davis Cup has been lacking success so far. The tennis followers are unable to find the updates of matches. They are facing difficulties in catching up with the ties since the regular television broadcasters are not airing the traditional event of tennis. Their ticket sales are suffering as not enough people are turning up for the event.

However, the optimistic Pique added, “We knew the first year would be difficult. It’s very difficult to communicate what’s the new format. It will be a process. Every year, people will know more. I am absolutely sure that in two, three years we will have full stadiums every day.”

In Madrid, Great Britain secured their place in the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup finals as Jamie Murray and Neal Skupski won their doubles match to clinch victory over Kazakhstan.
