Roger Federer at the Wimbledon grass courts – The Greatest Men’s player in history in his favourite tournament and playing surface. It’s obvious that it’s a beautiful sight to watch. But why is Federer so good on the grass court? Here are 5 reasons why.

5. Footwork

Roger Federer almost literally floats on grass. The Swiss can credit a lot of his success on grass to his astonishing footwork on the court.
Federer sets himself up for the shot beautifully and is quickly off his mark to chase balls around the court.

4. Net play

Federer, early on his career was really attacking and followed up his serves with inch perfect volleys.
A style that perfectly suits the grass, keeping the rallies short and crisp. It might have faded a bit over the years, when numerous baseline players forced him to change his tactics. But Federer has reinvented it with his childhood idol Stefan Edberg and looks much closer to his vintage self.

A record eighth title at Halle was only made possible by some phenomenal net play.

3. Serve

Grass has always been the hunting court of great servers and Federer possesses one of the finest serves ever witnessed in the game. His perfect action and accurate ball toss, makes it really easy for him to just maneuver his placement of the serve, without much change in action.
Federer’s serves are really hard to pick and the maestro can hit aces at will. Be it that kicking wide ace that goes away or the one down the T, it’s perfection all over.

2. Offensive style

The Swiss ace leads the chart for most winners at Wimbledon, more than 2500. Easily eclipsing the great Sampras. Federer has never been the one who’d keep the ball in play with solid defense, he rather dictates the play and comes up with elegant winners.

The off-forehand or the backhand down the line or the approaching forehand winner- termed as the greatest shot of the game by McEnroe– the grass gives no time to Federer’s opponent to react to his blistering frequency of winners.

#1. Federer Magic

There are some shots that cannot be put in the envelope of words. A writer once said that Roger produces shots that should be termed illegal. Well, that’s the magical play this guy brings with him and has been obliging the Centre Court crowd and everyone watching him for the past 15 years. It’s just the sheer elegance, finesse and ridiculously effortless shot-making that has made him the greatest player ever to step on the hallowed green lawn at Wimbledon.
